Fan Mail
The following is a very short extract of fan letters received, mostly, in 2005. If a theme is evident, and I think it is self evident, it is that my readers, quite reasonably, want more books. Well, all I can say, is that I thought after 9/11 my military work was worthwhile, but that I am now back in the writing business - albeit, after a longer absence than I would have wished.
Mr. O'Reilly:
I became thoroughly addicted to your books when I read Rules of the Hunt. Then, of course, I had to start at the beginning and read Games of the Hangman and I've just completed Devil's Footprint. Not only are they exciting, edge-of-your-seat reading, but also extremely informative. When will Satan's Smile be in print? I can hardly wait to devour another of your works.
Thank you for the most enjoyable reading I've experienced in quite some time. Please keep them coming.

Dear Victor,
I wrote you a long letter (e-mail) several years ago (or possibly even longer ago - at 53 my memory is showing signs of decay!), after contacting you by your e-mail address to see if you were going to write any new books.
You kindly responded to my inquiry with a lengthy communication including the recounting of how your divorce had side-railed the publication of your recent work. That is when I wrote back to you with an extensive account of my experience with divorce as well, and that was the end of our dialogue.
A fair amount of time has passed...I'm still teaching biology in Oregon, but my children have flown the coop. My wife(my 2nd!) and I travel extensively, and I write journals of our adventures, with the hope of trying to get some things published down the line. I've already written an overview of modern biology that I've been unable to get published, and also have a lengthy journal of the 185+ mts. (walk-ups) that I've hiked which I hope to condense and publish after I retire (in 2-4 years or so!). In any case I was just wondering how your writing has been going, and if you are going to publish any new novels involving Hugo Fitzduane? I'm sure you're very busy, but if you get a chance to give me a brief response, I'd be most appreciative. In any case, I wish you well in the future. I've enjoyed your writing thus far, and have reread the Hugo novels a number of times.
A Dios,
Kevin McCauley
I was looking for a new novel from you and the book store where I shop said your booksa are out of print and no new titles are forthcoming. What happened? Hugo was one of my favorite fictional characters. Hope you have not stopped writing.

Dear Mr. O'Reilly,
I have been awaiting the arrival of your next book with what I presume is the same anticipation shared by most of your fans. I notice your website has gone without update for quite some time and I hope that is not due to anything other than an abundance of work.
One section of your site refers to the completion of "Satan's Smile" and the imminence of "The Dragon's Response".
I can find neither of them at the megastores now popular or in alibris or amazon.
Can you find a moment to point my reading glasses in the right direction so I might enjoy the next few evenings in the company of Hugo Fitzduane and the other fascinating characters that populate your books?
Thank you for all of your books so far and I remain your faithful fan.
Sincerely,
Didier Hue
I saw on your web site that you have a book called The Dragon's Response that was to have come out in2002. I have tried every book store web site and no one has it or can order it. Do you know how I can buy it and also the book your now working on Satan's Smile. I have read all your previous and loved them. I would appreciate if you could let me know how to order these two lastest books.
Thank you
Have you stopped writing? I've been browsing the book sites, can't find anything new from you anywhere. Even your web-site hasn't been updated since last February.
Your readers need to see your work out there.
Hope there is a new work coming out soon.

It's been years since you promised a new book. Please don't forget your readers--keep on publishing the stories!

Dear Mr O'Reilly
I have been trying for years to find the book called "More Games of the Hangman" that someone told me about - does it exist ? I live in a small town in the Northern part of South Africa and we don't have too many book stores here so I order all my books through the internet - where do I have to go and look for your books ?
Thanks

Mr O'Reilly,
I never contact the authors of my favorite literature but its late and I'm undercaffeinated so I feel that, considering the circumstances, it wouldn't hurt to contact you (especially since email is so convenient.)
I just wanted to email you and express my appreciation for your work. I have only read Games of the Hangman but I loved it and fully intend to buy the other ones from an honest and legal source (as opposed to the seedy garage sales I frequent where the obligatory box o' books is hidden behind the rack of clothes so old they should be in a costume shop) in hopes that your contract is set up in a manner that you get a small percentage as royalties. So if you do get royalties for every book of yours sold then I expect a proper thank you note for whatever percentage of the profit you may have made off of my purchases (just kidding.)
Also, I have read your piece on writing and found it helpful. I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my life (aside from the obligatory ex wife, one and a half kids and small apartment in an older part of town.) However, I am as sure as anyone can be about anything that I do want to write and maybe in the process learn how to avoid abusing parentheses so much. So far I am the proud author of two unfinished and poorly structured screen plays, a few short stories, numerous school related papers and numerous unsent letters. (I think I may have a literary award coming to me yet. I'll just have to somehow make them forget I'm an American.)
Anyways, before I ramble for too long and take up too much of your time, I just wanted to say thanks for writing and keep it up. Thanks for inspiring and entertaining me. Keep up the good work, fight the good fight and live the adventure.
Sincerely,
Samuel Conner
Greetings !!
As a devoted reader of your 4?? existing novels, what are you up to since 1998? What of Hugo Fitzduane? Are you writing more with him?
Satans Smile?
Dragon's Response?
I have looked in US , England and Ireland for more tales by you..
The timing in the world seems good for such novels.
Carry On !! Steve
Hello Mr. O'Reilly,
I am a big fan of the Fitzduane series, as I was hooked after I read " Games of the Hangman" and then eagerly awaited each subsequent novel in the series. I was hooked from the first page and there were parts of each novel, that I had to remind myself to breathe, as I was holding my breath during some sequences!
I can't believe that I haven't seen any or all of them on the big-screen as yet. They would make a remarkable series, with the resourcefulness of the central character; the vast array of twisted villains; and then add to that the wide-scoping international locales.
1. Does any studio/producer have options on any or all of the series?
2. Who would you have play Victor, if a motion picyure was cast?
3. When is the next book coming out in this series, and what is the title?
4. What can you tell me about "Games of Vengeance" as I haven't read that as yet? Is it another in the series or a new character?
Keep up the great work, and I eagerly look forward to your reply, not to mention the next in the series!!
Continued success!
Sincerely,
