"Write about what you know!" is standard advice for the many of us who want to write - and it is good advice.

"Write from experience," is another, rather more restrictive, way of putting it.

Now that second piece of advice is kind of worrying. The truth is you don't to have experience everything directly that you write about. There are books and movies and all kinds of secondary sources of information.

If one did have to experience everything directly first, I would most probably have died doing research. Still, it helps to have an interesting life. Most of my most interesting experiences were never photographed - for which I have some cause to be grateful - but here are some photographs which should give you a broad brush picture. I'll be adding substantially to this collection over time.
